Let me first tell you what the title “Faustian” really means : “Faustian” imply a situation in which an ambitious person surrenders his integrity in order to achieve power and success for a unlimited term.
“Faustian Echoes” was released way back on June 26, 2012 by Agalloch. It is a two-part song based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s epic masterpiece “Faust.”. The lone monstrosity which is spreads over 21 minutes in length. This is the longest song which Agalloch has ever written.
The lyrics of the song are taken from an English translation of Goethe’s Faust. Selected phrases and film samples were used to create outlines the backbone of the original story. It is a dialogue between the Faust and the Mephistopheles ( the demon) .
Why am i writing this late? Well i came to know about this EP a few days back only.
Now lets talk about the music :
It starts with a tone creating an eerie atmosphere and this is when the dialogues starts. You are trying to figure out what the dialogue was and BAM! speedy percussion’s are accompanied by macabre vocals and down tuned guitars. There are sections which just have beautiful acoustic arpeggios to settle the tornado, which is caused by the heavy riffing and voracious vocals in the listeners mind. It is hard not to get lost within the mesmerizing instrumentation which the band has been able to create. It is all in sequence-go high, a slow-tempo shift, a forlorn drift, a steadfast build, and then a mind blowing solo. A good portion of this album is saturated with powerful blastbeats. You can experience rhythm change at various points but it is all so synchronized that you just dont feel disconnected. As the song is about to come to an end , drumming becoming more tight and guitar riffs become more rigorous. The album style is dark, tragic, artistic and the band has been able to convey those sensations from their majestic creation.
Faustian Echoes is the most surprising work of Agalloch yet, since you dont see many bands taking up a series of dialogues and coming out with a classic like this. This album is an epic and is highly recommended.
